Named after an old landowner
The village takes its name from a thirteenth-century landowner, and the surrounding ground was once boggy woodland before it was drained and settled. The village stayed a small, isolated hamlet until the roads through it improved.
Grown up around the railway
Beare Green's more noticeable growth followed the opening of the nearby Holmwood railway station in the Victorian era, after which the scattered hamlet gradually filled in along the main road.
Within the Surrey Hills
The village sits on the lower slopes that rise towards Leith Hill, within the boundary of the Surrey Hills National Landscape, giving it a more rural setting than its position on the busy A24 might suggest.
